Although Brazin's due date was Thursday, February 4th, she seem to have other ideas. It was a long day for her Tuesday, as she began having some serious contractions early in the day, but had to wait till after 5 in the evening before her first pup finally decided to say hello to the world.
After the first one was born the rest of the whelping went pretty quickly. All her babies were born by 9:30 that evening. She was exhausted, and I am sure thrilled that the delivery was over. However, taking her job as mom very seriously, she still did not get her much needed rest. With newborn puppies, the moms job has just begun.
Like a human mother, she is always alert making sure the puppies are all ok. Her tongue must be sore from the constant licking them to keep them clean. If one moves or makes a sound then she checks them out right away to see what the problem is. Caring for her newborns is all Brazin is interested in right now, and she will stay in the box all day only leaving the pups for a very short time for her much needed bathroom breaks. Sometimes she gets so exhausted, that when she finally doses off, she plunges into such a deep sleep that you can her snoring.
In several days, she will start relaxing a bit, and begin to rest more as the pups grow and get more active. I am happy to see that every day they are gaining weight. They are all good nursers and I am not surprised because mom has plenty of nourishing milk for them to feast on.
